Blocking out most of the Hellbinder’s haunting words, Elina recognizes that, little control or no, the creature will have her completely restrained in only a few more seconds. If she is going to try to avoid capture, she will have to act now. Her assets are few—a filgo-diretris enchantment worked into her dress the day before she returned to the labyrinth alone, and the few unimpressive combat magics the Scholar can manage with any power she musters thereafter.

Her only hope, she knows, is to act quickly and then to put as much distance between herself and the Hellbinder as possible.

As Uncle Anjer’s nightmarish voice details the discovery of the arch symbol by gremlins that observed the captive wizardess--Elina's half-sister--in her cell, the Scholar’s eyes are drawn down to the small figure caged at her flank, next to the burning candle. And while the Hellbinder’s cords begin to tighten around her neck, the creature explains that the gremlins scrawled the arch on the wall in the blood of their fellows slain by the wolf-woman in some desperation, the same way Jervil had tried to appeal to Drea’s sense of destiny after her dual quickening.

Barely visible in the candlelight, Elina sees the short wall of her former cage where the symbol was apparently scrawled by Avora, and she knows what she must do.
