Elsewhere in the labyrinthine passages, Luther Vandermoor pauses, holding his breath, as a distant scream echoes through the darkness. The sound comes from some distance behind him, and it is broken, made by a woman struggling mightily in fear and anger. Turning, he takes a hesitant step in that direction, then stumbles faster when the scream sounds again.
