"Life is change," the Rat-Man responds lightly, assuming his own voice, "and the sorceries that I indulge in only accelerate that." He pauses, his eyes flashing. "You, however, don't seem to have that problem."

The cryptic words only further seat cold terror in the Cat Witch's throat, but her agile mind jumps quickly to change the subject. "Jervil, there is no time for this. Luther Vandermoor and one of the Magistrate's Scholars have found a way here from the Catacombs. They'll be poking around in the Undercellar any minute. Whatever gimmicks you've placed on this damned net have slowed me down--we have to warn Callista and get rea-..."

Jervil's high, squeaking laughter interrupts and stills her words. "We needn't worry about Dear Callista," he sniffles, "nor should we be concerned about the Magistrate or any of her agents. Besides, I'm sure that your feral manifestation is more than sufficient to deal with them all." He pauses, eyes widening in mock confusion. "But, where is the feline wraith? Surely it would make short work out of this little cocooning-cord contraption of mine..."
