"I'm not the man who killed your mother, Cat Witch," Jervil snarls, abruptly picking her up and throwing her over his furred shoulder. "I killed him. I killed that drunken fool who murdered her. Yes, he died horribly. And I've killed all of your poorly-behaved clients over the years, those who avoided Callista's blades at least. And do you know why?" The Rat-Man pauses to steady himself beneath his burden--though Annalae weighs less than Jervil, her height is difficult to balance.

"J-Jervil," Annalae begins, the small, muscular shoulder digging into her abdomen and ribs. Struggling both for words and for breath in her uncomfortable position, she grunts in an effort to achieve both, but though her legs flail briefly, Jervil clutches her tightly and keeps her perched a short distance above the floor. "Put... put me-..."

The Rat Man ignores her, carrying her from the storeroom into the Undercellar proper. "I've had to kill them," he says, brooding. "I've needed their strength, their human-ness to sustain me as my sorceries have eaten away at who and what I was. No, I'm not the man who killed your mother. That man is long, long dead..."
