Jervil carries his prize into the Chamber of the Grand Mirror, now empty of its earlier light sources and the Rat-Man's gremlin minions. "Maladyne would have taken you long ago, you know," he sniffles. "She intended me to send you through the mirror like the others, leaving only a lifeless reflection of yourself here in our world. These reflections--"Fadings," she calls them--will ultimately vanish altogether, or turn into a Mote if prodded and guided properly. This is what Maladyne had planned for you, Annalae, but I persuaded her differently. I protected you, allowing you to aid Maladyne's efforts and enjoy her support, and all you gave me in return was your scorn, your malice, and your disgust."
Regaining some of her strength, the Cat Witch gazes around the specters hovering translucent in the darkness of the chamber, but it is the flavor of betrayal she senses in Jervil's voice that is most unnerving. The Rat-Man pauses to steady his burden on his shoulder, squeezing Annalae's thighs in his gnarled arms and clawed hands. Fearful of upsetting him further, she holds quite still.
"But I can hardly blame you for being disgusted by me. What I have become is hideous and nightmarish, without doubt." The Rat-Man trembles beneath her, and she is startled to realize he is laughing. "Ironic that you, yourself, have given me the inspiration, the possibility for a renewal of what I lost long ago." He pats her leg lovingly, sending a shiver through her back. "Yes, indeed it is ironic that the man who killed your harlot mother is long gone, but you--her courtesan daughter--may be the means of bringing him back..."
