Death in the Cornfield by faile35 Death in the Cornfield by faile35
Like I said, the men in my work are mostly dead or dying. Who killed the poor farmer whose body now lies pitchforked, twisted, and bleeding at the foot of the scarecrow? I'm not sure, really, but I like the scarecrow's face. I really like the corn in the background, too. I hope this one's not too freaky, because it's not the creepiest of my lot...

EDIT (Oct 18, 2007): I removed the Mature Content setting. If someone thinks I need to reattach it, please let me know. =)

Enjoy!

Well, different things hit different people, of course. Some folks look at "Sylvan Girl" [link] , and, realizing the female subject is not tied up or unhappy in any way, decide that that one is definitely the creepiest thing I've drawn... ;)

Regardless, I'm glad you think this one works as a creepy piece. I've always liked it. A lot. =) Thanks!

So when you do a woodcut-type drawing that's joyful & mythological without the slightest hint of sexual conquest people are distrustful of it?

I like the idea of this drawing. Reminds me a little bit of Jeepers Creepers.
I think he is better dead ... and forget the filter, there´s even no blood shown. ;P
Well done work!

stupid mature content filter. man, i'd love to see this piece, but it appears deviantart has gotten all hoighty toighty about the filter. can't disable it if you're under 18, can't change your account's age. not that it would matter to you overage folks and those of you lucky enough to have the foresight to make your account older then 18 to avoid all this filter bullshit, but i find it kind of a stupid move on dA's part. there are few underage people who go on dA to abuse of mature content. the rest of us happen to enjoy art for what it is, and are QUITE restricted as to what art we're "allowed" to see, now. besides, who would go on dA for... those... purposes, when there are so many rules as to what's allowed on dA and what isn't?

still gotta wait another year for dA to ship me out a box of maturity as my birthday present, and let me choose for myself what to see and what not to see.

There's really nothing on this one that requires a mature content filter, actually. There is a corpse, but you really can't see any death wounds. I'll go in and take the setting off and see if anyone complains about it. If so, I'll put it back on.

Regardless, I'm flattered that you want to see this. There are probably some others that I have marked "mature content" just to be safe when they really don't need it. Harsh violence and gore (I only have a couple of those) along with nudity (I have a TON of those) run the border of DA decency, apparently, but not Death in the Cornfield... =)

sorry it took so long.. i been busy... but i actually fell in love with this piece... there's quite a bit of dark humour in the way the crows are all pretending nothing's up, like a bunch of kids trying to pretend they didn't steal the last cookie from the jar... the scarecrow's the best though... his pose is so casual, and his expression is so evilly happy.. the fact that the crows and the scarecrow look like they're on the same side, makes the scarecrow all the more evil looking... i don't know who did it, but you know.....

.....they DO call it a murder of crows.......

No problem. I'm a month overdue in responding to you over it. Crows do look evil, but I'm glad you like the scarecrow's expression. That and the wall-of-corn background are my favorite parts of this one. =) Thanks!

One of my favorite subjects.
Nothing beats scarecrows and cornfields for creepy.

So hard to find excellent drawings of them as well.

Brilliantly done.

Thank you! I've always been quite pleased with the way this one turned out, especially the scarecrow's face and the faded corn in the back. I'm glad you like it. =D

This reminds me of a movie where, in the beginning, the creepy winged villan is pretending to be a scarecrow, then a little boy walks up and whoosh!! The scarecrow thing flys off with the boy to parts unknown.

lol. A Scarecrow!Death. Pretty unique. Any I think the scarecrow did it and the crows are his minions looking for witnesses. Which means we are all about to die. XD

Well, I think the scarecrow did it, too. Zoom in on his face and look closely, and he has that insane, maniacal grin of death, which is usually a dead giveaway. Thank you! =) --Faile35

I've seen Wizard of Oz and I blame the scarecrow

It delights me how the crows are looking anywhere but at the corpse; guilty perhaps? And the face on the scarecrow is very grim reaperish, very sinister. I like how the corn is suggested in a very subtle way. A great creepy piece.
