“Perhaps it requires the loftiness of an idealist to know the difference between a few lashes and the finality of the Harbinger’s destruction,” Elina responds, turning back toward him. “I… saw things, learned things, while enduring the Hellbinder’s lash. And… it’s leash. Most of them were grave and complex, far weightier than the trivialities you seem to hold to so defensively. Would you have the leaders of our people turn away from them in favor of your ‘small, simple affairs’?”

Ordiel tipped his head while extricating his hand from the glove. “Another fine point, and without doubt one for the testing, were lives not to be ruined in the process. But while another might say that the trick is in knowing which matters, lofty or low, can be managed by the leaders in question and which are beyond them, I would say that all matters lofty will ultimately be assessed against those lower, small, simple affairs. A mother who resorts to theft to keep food in her child’s belly would agree, don’t you think? The loftier concerns of law and crime are dissolved in the management of these baser concerns.”

“Perhaps having enough food for your people does not need to be considered a ‘baser concern’ for a leader,” Elina retorts evenly.
